Patisserie des Reves December, 2009

It is sometimes difficult to keep up with Philippe Conticini as he does not cease to make himself more and more discreet in order to come back each time with new, more surprising propositions. It was in Anvers that he became an expert in sugar, at Petrossian he tested the ground with savory products, in a micro-boutique in the Marais he focused on toffees, biscuits and cookies. Today he runs a local pâtisserie which revisits some of the old classics: tarte tatin, Paris-Brest, éclairs…and with such genius!

Giant Meringues, Konditor & Cook, London November, 2009

While Konditor & Cook are known for their cakes, I have to say their giant raspberry and chocolate meringues (crunchy on the outside and still chewy on the inside) are a bit of a statement too. I stirred pieces through whipped cream and fresh berries for a delicious (and easy!) dessert.

Priors Clotted Cream Butter, London November, 2009

It is a well known fact that I love butter. Made from clotted cream, this particular one grabbed me by it’s colour – pure, happy, yellow! You will not find this natural colour in supermarket butters, that’s for sure. The stamp means it has been made in the traditional way too. Slathered over a hot toasted crumpet is pure (butter) heaven.

Breakfast Oysters November, 2009

A Taste of the East Coast at Sunrise

Every Saturday morning in Nova Scotia’s capital city, foodies in search of local fresh produce congregate at the Halifax Farmers’ Market. It is a bit of a puzzle finding your way around the ancient brick hallways and stone corridors of the market, but the quest is well rewarded. There are two purveyors of fresh oysters who have started a new and uniquely Nova Scotian tradition – oysters for breakfast. These delicious little tastes of the sea, strike the palette in a refreshingly salty way. “They wake your mouth up, a squeeze of lemon and you are good to go. ”

Chorizo Sammy, Brinidisa, Borough Market, London September, 2009

Don’t let the queue for these yummy sandwiches scare you – it is well worth the wait! The spicy grilled chorizo meets roasted sweet piquillo peppers topped with robust rocket all on a soft and chewy bap. Can you say mouth party?
